Essential Tips for Your Hajj Journey: Walking, Packing, and More!

When it comes to preparing for Hajj, there are a few things you’ll want to keep in mind to make your journey smoother and more enjoyable. From staying safe to managing your walking distances and packing efficiently, we’ve got you covered. Here’s a rundown of key things you need to know, especially if you’re planning your Hajj trip with Universal Brothers!

Keep Your Belongings Safe with Anti-Theft Bags

Let’s start with keeping your belongings safe. It’s always a good idea to invest in an anti-theft bag. Trust me, you’ll thank yourself later! Anti-theft bags are awesome because they come with locks and reinforced straps, making it way harder for anyone to snatch your things while you’re walking around. If you want recommendations, we’ve linked some of the best ones in the description below. I personally use a brand called Pacsafe, and they’ve been a game changer for me.

Get Ready for a LOT of Walking

Hajj involves a lot of walking, so it’s time to start practicing those steps! You’ll be walking anywhere from 10,000 to 20,000 steps a day, and it can get pretty intense. On one day, we even hit 50,000 steps! That said, it’s super important to prepare yourself physically. You might even consider walking from Mifa to Mina instead of taking the coach. I learned the hard way that taking the coach was a major time-waster. It took us 3 hours for a journey that would’ve taken me about an hour to walk!

If you’re healthy and able, get those walking shoes on now. If you’re listening to this and thinking, “I don’t want to walk that much,” don’t worry—there are options. Coaches are available, especially for elderly travelers, and some people even use wheelchairs for longer distances. But, if you can, walking is often quicker and a lot more freeing!

Stay Comfortable During Your Walks

If you do decide to walk a lot (which, let’s face it, you probably will), be sure to pack a change of clothes in your backpack. After walking for a while, you’ll probably get sweaty, and the last thing you want is to get sick from the drastic temperature change, especially when you’re stepping into air-conditioned malls afterward. Trust me, I learned that lesson the hard way! I got so cold that I ended up getting sick the next day.

So, pack a light change of clothes—something comfy like a thawb or abaya—to freshen up, and make sure to keep your energy up!

What to Pack for Mina

When it’s time to head to Mina, packing smart is key. Depending on your travel package, you might need to move your luggage from your hotel in Mecca to Mina. If so, don’t pack everything you own! Go for a small hand luggage or a medium-sized backpack (45 liters is a great size). You’ll need space to move around in your Mina camp room, and trust me, a giant suitcase won’t help.

In my camp room, space was tight, and I had to put everything under the bed just to make it fit. So, keep it light and compact—only take what you’ll need for the week. Roll your clothes and use vacuum bags to save space. You’ll thank yourself when you’re looking for that extra bit of room!

Lightweight Backpacks are a Must

Once you’re in Mina, you’ll need something light for daily walks and trips to Arafat. Leave the big suitcase behind and pack a small, lightweight backpack. Something around 10 liters is perfect for carrying just the essentials—water, snacks, and a change of clothes. I found a great one from ASDA in the UK, but you can find similar options everywhere. A backpack with a water bladder is especially useful because you don’t want to be constantly stopping to open and close your bag for water.

Trust me, a small backpack is way easier to carry than a tote bag or anything too bulky. And with all the walking, your shoulders will thank you!

Final Tips: Stay Healthy and Hydrated!

Whether you’re walking or taking the coach, always stay hydrated and keep your energy up. Remember, Hajj is about more than just the physical journey—it’s a spiritual one. Keep your duas (prayers) strong, and make the most of this incredible opportunity.

Safe travels, and see you on the next adventure!
